 Our Eckmans are descendants of Johann Ulrich Ekman born about 1700.  They are Opal DeBeeson's lingeage on her father's side as noted below.  See pictures of them.  The following is quoted from a genology of the Eckmans and Meyers families by Quinter Stitzel done March, 1980.

    "According to the records at the Lancaster, Penn. Historical society, the first Eckman to settle in Lancaster Co. were Johannes and Eva Dorthea (Seitz) Eckman.  they settled in Strasburg, Twp., and came from Germany to America about Sept. 18, 1727.  They came in company with 109 Palatinates, who came accompanied by their reformed minister, George Michael Weiss.  Johannes was born about 1700 and died in 1755.  He and his wife had two sons born in Germany, but in America they had six more children, listed as follows:

Born in Germany:

1.  Hieronymus (1718-1796) married Barbara Slaymaker;

2.  John Peter (1719-1776) married Mary Magadaline ?

Born in America:

 3. Henry (1730-1790)  married Esther Kunkle - May 3, 1756;

4. Christine (no dates) married John Kunkle;

5. Elizabeth (no dates) married Jacob Foutz (also Phouts and Pfautz);

6. Anna Barbara Johanna (no dates) married Peter Shaefer-June, 1750;

7. Anna Catherine (baptized June 29, 1739) married Andrew Frank-April 17, 1759;

8.  Jacob (1737-1778 (died at Valley forge) married Anna Maria Shrader- April 19, 1760.

    We believe our Ancestor, John Eckman, born Jan. 5, 1796 was decended from Johannes and Eva Dorthea Eckman above mentioned.  Perhaps a grandson or a great grandson.  In our search we have not established who our John is descended from, but it seems he must be from Johannes.  John and Susanna Groff were married on May 7, 1820.  Susanna Groff or Graft was born sept. 14, 1795, the daughter of John Graft (1754-Oct. 19, 1819) and Susanna Kendig (1758-July 25, 1827).  They had eight children, three of whom died very young.  they are listed as follows:

1.  Elizabeth-born Mar. 2, 1821;

2.  Simon-born Apr. 11, 1823-died June 10, 1841;

3.  Daniel G. - born Apr. 11 1825;

4.  John Henry - born Aug. 25, 1826;

5.  Christian - born May 17, 1828 - died May 19, 1829;

6.  Susanna - born Jan. 12, 1831;

7.  Amanda - born Jan. 16, 1833-died July 5, 1835;

8.  Catherine -  born apr. 5, 1835

    Susanna, the morther, died Apr. 5, 1835 the day here daughter Catherine was born, leaving John, the father, with a family of young children.  He later married Mary Elizabeth Pfoutz, but on June 18, 1846 John died which left Mary Elizabeth to complete the raising of the family and settle the estate.  Of the five surviving children, two were of age, but the three minors needed to have a Guardian appointed to settle their interests, so their Uncle Daniel Eckman was appointed.  There was considerable real estate and personal property to distribute.

    That Fall, on Nov. 12, 1846, Daniel G. the oldest son, at age 21 was married to Leah Hoak, the sixth child of Henry (May 15, 1786-Dec. 2, 1834) and Elizabeth (Feb 25, 1792 - Feb. 19, 1839) Hoak.  They had nine children as shown:

1.  Susanna (1813-1834)  2.  Elizabeth  3.  Jacob (1817-1891)  4. Ann, married Daniel Helm-died 1848  5. Mary  6. Leah (Dec. 25, 1826) married Daniel G. Eckman  7. John 8.  Magdalena  9. Henry, born after his father's death.

    Leah's parents, the Hoak's, were early immigrants from Leipsig, Germany.  Conrad Hoak came to Lancaster Co., Penn. from Germany Oct. 29, 1770, landing at the Port in Philadelphia.  He was probvably the Great Grandfather to Leah Hoak above who married Daniel G. Eckman.  The Hoak lineage chart would run about as follows:  Conrad Hoak, Andrew Hoak, Henry Hoak, Leah Hoak.  The Eckmans, Hoaks, Meyers and Helms families seemed to be closely associated in Lancaster Co..  Maybe they were neighbors or maybe just friends, but in later years in Illinois they still held to that association.

After their marriage, Daniel and Leah resided near Lancaster and had the following family:

1. Amanda-Dec. 9, 1847-married B.K. Meyers

2. Simon-Feb. 9, 1848-died May 14 1871, age 23 yrs, buried in Lanark, Ill.

3. Mary Louisa-Aug. 22, 1850-died July 12, 1851, age 1 yr, buried, Penn

4. Emma Elizabeth-Jan. 9, 1852-died Oct. 21, 1856, age 4 yrs, buried in Penn.

5. Anna-Sept. 17, 1853-married Wm. C. Kimmel

6. Elizabeth-Oct. 9, 1856-married Jacob Royer

7. John Truman-Sept. 16, 1858-married Mollie Dubble

8. Jacob Alpheus-Mar. 8, 1864-married Ellen Martin

In March of 1870, Daniel G. Eckman and his family left Lancaster Co. to come to Lanark, Ill. where he bought land south and east of Lanark in Rock Creek Twp., Sections 17 and 21, some of the best land around Lanark today.  Here the family grew up and as they were married they settled on nearby farms as well as the home base farm.  But grief came their way when Mother Leah passed away on May 20, 1883.  After that Daniel G. spent most of the remainder of his life with his youngest, Alpheus, until his death on May 12, 1903.  He was buried in the Lanark Cemetary beside his wife and son, Simon.

The families remained close by for a few more years until the Wm. C. Kimmel family moved to Sheldon, Ia. for the remainder of their years.  Later J. Truman Eckman rented his farm and moved into Lanark to enter business there.  In later years his son, Dan, left Lanark to enter business in a larger capacity.  In 1912 Galeon and Christie Meyers sold their farms, Christie to move to Wisconsin and Galeon moved into Lanark to become a carpenter.  In 1937 Alpheus Eckman and his daughter, the Kampmeiers, sold their farm to move to LaVerne, California.  So ended the farm history that the Eckmans helped establish around Lanark."
